{"id":4263,"date":"2016-06-22T20:39:07","date_gmt":"2016-06-23T03:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/alaska-ferry-system-looking-into-selling-the-taku\/"},"modified":"2016-06-22T20:39:07","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T03:39:07","slug":"alaska-ferry-system-looking-into-selling-the-taku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/alaska-ferry-system-looking-into-selling-the-taku\/","title":{"rendered":"Alaska ferry system looking into selling the Taku"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>KETCHIKAN \u2014 <\/strong>The Alaska Marine Highway System is exploring the sale of the state ferry Taku.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking into retiring the Taku and divesting of it,\u201d said Alaska Department of Transportation spokesman Jeremy Woodrow. \u201cIt\u2019s not a quick decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still early days in the process, and there\u2019s no timeline for a sale, he said, but noted that \u201cit\u2019s highly likely that that will be where we\u2019re going as a state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state needs to determine whether it would owe any of the cash from a sale to the federal government because of Federal Highways Administration funding that has been used to maintain the vessel.<\/p>\n<p>It costs approximately $3 million per year in crew, insurance and generator fuel to keep the Taku moored at the state-owned south berth at the Ketchikan Shipyard.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/juneauempire.com\/state\/2015-05-13\/amhs-ferry-taku-beached-summer\" target=\"_blank\">Taku ferry beached for the summer<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Taku also serves as a \u201chotel ship\u201d for the system. Employees who are temporarily in Ketchikan are staying aboard the vessel rather than in hotel rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Woodrow said the ferry system\u2019s plan \u201chas always been to retire a mainline vessel when those (Alaska Class Ferries) come online.\u201d The two ferries being constructed at the shipyard will be finished in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The Taku is one of the three ships built when the Alaska Marine Highway System was created in the 1960s. Since then, its fleet has grown to 11 ships.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel isn\u2019t scheduled to be replaced.
