{"id":44068,"date":"2019-03-02T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-03T07:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/fire-department-responds-to-emergency-call-for-injured-hiker-at-ice-cave\/"},"modified":"2019-03-05T08:42:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T17:42:59","slug":"fire-department-responds-to-emergency-call-for-injured-hiker-at-ice-cave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/fire-department-responds-to-emergency-call-for-injured-hiker-at-ice-cave\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire department responds to emergency call for injured hiker at ice cave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Capital City Fire\/Rescue was called for an emergency situation at the Mendenhall Glacier Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Someone fell in the ice caves, and responders were assisting as of 3:56 p.m. Sunday, Assistant Fire Chief Ed Quinto said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCapitalCityFireRescue%2Fposts%2F1051355348400362&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"651\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowTransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Martha Rubi Marrs said she was at the ice caves when the incident happened, and that she was the one who called 911.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There was this young couple in their 20s at the entrance of the ice caves when me and two friends came out from the caves,&rdquo; Marrs said in a Facebook conversation with the Empire. &ldquo;They asked me how it was inside and if they would have to crawl. I told them that it was beautiful inside, but definitely there were areas that they would need to crawl or crouch. The young lady entered and she fell, but she didn&rsquo;t get hurt. She stood up and the guy followed her, but he also fell, hurting himself.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Marrs said that after the man fell down, he wasn&rsquo;t able to stand up.
