Juneau Piano Series set for grand finale

The Juneau Piano Series will close with a group recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center, 350 Whittier St.

Mei Xue, Sue Kazama, Douglas Smith, Judith Mitchell and series organizer Jon Hays will be performing.

“For me, it was important to put together this recital of talented locals because they are a representative sampling of the larger community of piano enthusiasts in Juneau,” Hays said. “It’s people like them that make the series possible and their musicianship is to be embraced. Many of us meet regularly for ‘piano club’ and play for each other and discuss various topics of music history and performance. While I have had the privilege of attending the masterclasses and recitals of some of the great pianists of the world, I always learn something fundamental about music making from hearing our local players perform. High level music making is not the sole domain of those with college degrees and pedigreed careers.”

The series was part of the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council’s Art by the People Art for the People series, and Hays said it will resume in the fall.
