JAHC: Large Prints of Slow Photos, Photographs by Kurt Smith<\/strong>, Juneau Arts & Culture Center, 350 Whittier St., 4:30- 7 p.m.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council will feature photographer Kurt Smith as its May gallery artist. Smith uses a slow and methodical method to create his artwork.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The Davis Gallery: Plein Rein Artists<\/strong>, 101 Egan Drive, 4-7 p.m. Plein Air in French mean “open air” or “outside”— Juneau’s Plein Rein Group embraces this style of landscape painting and describes itself as a group of kindred spirits who meet at Coppa downtown every Saturday at 9 a.m. to select a weather-friendly spot to do art together en plein air, rain or shine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum: Crusin’ the Fossil Coastline with Ray Troll, <\/strong>395 Whittier Street, 4:30-7 p.m. Be prepared to look at the world through the eyes of a walrus and ammonite. Alaska artist Ray Troll and paleontologist Kirk Johnson, Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, logged more than 10,000 miles in 250 days traveling the North American coast in search of fossils and the stories they tell. The opening reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum. At 7 p.m., Troll will speak.<\/p>\n

Coppa: Aleesa McCarthy, <\/strong>917 Glacier Ave #102, 4-6 p.m. Coppa will feature local artist Aleesa McCarthy and her recent mixed media works inspired by the beautiful Southeast Alaska wonderland.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Juneau-Douglas City Museum: “Legacy” by painter Christianne Carrillo, and “The Rhythm of Winter” <\/strong>Fourth and Main streets, 4:30-7 p.m. There is a free opening reception for two new exhibits: The Rhythm of Winter: What We Do in the Cold and Dark, and solo artist Christianne Carrillo’s, Legacy. Both exhibits will be on display through October.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Salmon Beyond Borders: Community Art Show, <\/strong>201 Main St., 4:30-7 p.m. The event includes art from Elevate Art Studio, Katie Ione Craney, WILD by Nature, “The Salmon Way” by author Amy Gulick, and more. This year is the International Year of the Salmon. To celebrate, this show will share stories of Southeast Alaska’s wild salmon rivers and the connections salmon foster. There will be light refreshments.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Sealaska Heritage: Free exhibit admission to “Yéil Yádi – Raven Child” and “Our Grandparents’ Names on the Land” and featured artists, <\/strong>105 S. Seward St. Walter Soboleff Building, 4:30-8 p.m. Sealaska Heritage will offer free admission to its exhibits, “Yéil Yádi – Raven Child” and “Our Grandparents’ Names on the Land.” “Yéil Yádi – Raven Child” is a retrospective exhibit on renowned Tlingit master artist Nathan Jackson that will run through October 2019. In the lobby, SHI will host featured artists Sugar Bear Treasures, Myrna Gardner and Rhonda Butler.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Gross-Alaska Theaters: Summer Kick-Off Preview Experience, <\/strong>222 Front St., 4:30- 6:30 p.m. This lets people kick off the summer movie season with a special preview experience. They will be showing 20 minute reels of trailers for upcoming summer movies. Local artist Sydney Bauer of Musical Menagerie will be featured. Free drinks and popcorn will be served.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Heritage Downtown Café: Kris Reed, <\/strong>130 Front St., 4:30-7 p.m. For the month of May, they will feature artwork by Kris Reed at the downtown location. Reed uses a variety of glass fusing techniques to create vibrant pieces inspired by the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Annie Kaill’s: Seward Street Grand Opening and Three Guest Artists<\/strong>, 124 Seward St., 4:30-7 p.m. Annie Kaill’s has moved to 124 Seward Street, just up the street from Heritage Coffee and across the street from The Rookery and Shoefly. May 2019 featured artists are Constance Baltuck, Abby Focht and Louise Kuntz-Tadda.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Stop in for refreshments, buy a chance in the theater’s annual travel raffle, pick out some pretty new summer undies and you might score some PT swag and free tickets to the show.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

They will also have in-store visiting exhibitors: Reid Harris, an Alaskan wood artist who crafts local timber into functional masterpieces, and Carley Thayer, a local Aleut jewelry artist who uses traditional fur mediums and transforms them into contemporary wearable art.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Kindred Post: Alpenglow Candle Co.<\/strong>, 145 S. Franklin St, 4:30-7 p.m. Alpenglow Candle Co. returns to Kindred Post to celebrate its two year anniversary with a BYOC (Bring Your Own Container) candle pour. Bring an old mug, cut wine bottle, mason jar or any other container under 9 ounces of volume and the Alpenglow team will pour a custom scented candle just for you. Twenty pounds of wax will be poured, and candles take about 30 minutes to cool.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t
