{"id":48354,"date":"2019-05-23T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/fishing-boat-captain-fined-for-polluting-wrangell-waters\/"},"modified":"2019-05-23T21:25:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T05:25:00","slug":"fishing-boat-captain-fined-for-polluting-wrangell-waters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/fishing-boat-captain-fined-for-polluting-wrangell-waters\/","title":{"rendered":"Fishing boat captain fined for polluting Wrangell waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANCHORAGE &mdash; A fishing boat captain who dumped sandblast waste into Southeast Alaska waters was ordered to pay $10,000 and perform 40 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors said 32-year-old Brannon Finney of Bellingham, Washington, dumped waste to avoid a $1,460 disposal fee.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Scoble on Wednesday also ordered 18 months of probation for Finney and a public apology.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Finney&rsquo;s boat had been sandblasted for repainting. On June 15, 2017, she and crewmembers left Wrangell for Petersburg carrying 16,000 pounds of sandblast waste.<\/p>\n<p>A camera crew filming for a possible television reality showed the vessel dumping part of the load into Sumner Strait.<\/p>\n<p>An Alaska State Trooper questioned Finney in Petersburg about the material she&rsquo;d carried out of Wrangell.
