{"id":51424,"date":"2019-08-06T10:40:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-06T18:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/watch-youth-group-debuts-tlingit-language-music-video\/"},"modified":"2019-08-06T15:38:31","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T23:38:31","slug":"watch-youth-group-debuts-tlingit-language-music-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/watch-youth-group-debuts-tlingit-language-music-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch: Youth group debuts Tlingit-language music video"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t\t\t\t<p>A new music video pays homage to traditional values and older ancestors.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>Ix&#817;six&#817;&#225;n, Ax&#817; &#7732;w&#225;an (IAK), a youth arts group, debuted a new music video for the nearly all-Tlingit-language song &ldquo;Spirit&rdquo; Saturday evening at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s about our ancestors whose names we carry,&rdquo; said Will Kronick, adviser to the group that formed as part of Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska&rsquo;s Native Connections program in 2018, to introduce the video.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8n2cG_SuWg4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>The making of the music video was supported by Tlingit &#038; Haida through a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Native Connections grant, Kronick said. The Native Connections program offers a space for youths to develop culturally based social, emotional, mental and emotional skills. The video will be uploaded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCW-4LwtpFXxEJcLrUp921uw\" target=\"_blank\">Tlingit &#038; Haida YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>Arias Hoyle, whom IAK members credited as the principal songwriter, said &ldquo;Spirit&rdquo; was specifically written about one of his great-great uncles, Yaw Du N&#233;i, from whom Hoyle takes his Tlingit name.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>&ldquo;He was one of the fluent Tlingit speakers,&rdquo; Hoyle said in an interview at the release party. &ldquo;The song is me saying I am not fluent, but you will accept that and carry on the name.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"post-attachment in-story\"><a href='https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1440\" height=\"974\" src=\"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Watch: Youth group debuts Tlingit-language music video\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1-1024x693.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1-640x433.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/17977741_web1_VideoParty1-1200x812.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1199px) 98vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<p>In &ldquo;Spirit,&rdquo; which is IAK&rsquo;s third video, shadow silhouettes of Hoyle and his namesake exchange verses to that effect in Ling&#237;t, the Tlingit language.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>The video, which was shot in Juneau, was a six-month effort, group members said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to Hoyle, the IAK features Jaylynn Martin, Keegan Kanan, Colin Rose, Sierra Guerrero-Flores, Kendra Parks, Kenndra &ldquo;Kenndra Lamar&rdquo; Willard, Arturo Rodriguez, Aidan Wilson and Jordan Bennett. (Ben Hohenstatt | Capital City Weekly)<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<p>Each year, new youths join IAK, and Willard was credited with an influx of young women who contributed to the project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>&ldquo;I was the only girl out of like eight boys, and I felt like bringing in more girls for it,&rdquo; Willard said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>So she recruited her cousin, Martin, and friend, Guerrero-Flores.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>&ldquo;It was fun making the music video,&rdquo; Martin said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>And it won&rsquo;t be the last one IAK makes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>&ldquo;We are planning another video,&rdquo; Martin said during a short question-and-answer segment with the couple dozen or so people in attendance. &ldquo;There is another video coming eventually.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p><hr \/><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p><b>\u2022 Contact reporter Ben Hohenstatt at (907)523-2243 or bhohenstatt@juneauempire.com.
