Norwegian Cruise Lines intends to build an additional cruise ship dock at the property the company recently purchased on Egan Drive<\/a> in downtown Juneau.<\/p>\n

“Broadly, they’re interested in a cruise ship dock,” City Manager Rorie Watt told the Assembly at its regular meeting Monday night. He said he had spoken with Norwegian’s executive vice president of onboard revenue and destination services, Howard Sherman.<\/p>\n

Norwegian wanted to, “demonstrably show they’d like to invest in the community,” Watt said at the end of the Assembly’s meeting.<\/p>\n

Watt had previous indicated to the Empire<\/a> that the company was interested in a dock but he wouldn’t confirm that at the time.<\/p>\n

On Sept. 9, Norwegian paid $20 million<\/a> in a bid for a 2.9 acre plot of land across Egan Drive from the Juneau Arts and Culture Center and next to the Coast Guard station.<\/p>\n

That land was owned by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority which sold the land in a sealed bid auction. The next highest bidder for the land was Royal Caribbean Cruises, with a 13 million bid.<\/p>\n
