WOUNDED EAGLE\u2019S NEST<\/p>\n

\nYou are a bit hidden from the road;<\/em><\/p>\n many seem oblivious or don\u2019t know you exist. <\/em><\/p>\n You stand beautiful, surrounded by towering trees <\/em><\/p>\n where eagles meet and rest and soar again.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You are more than a home. <\/em><\/p>\n You\u2019re a comforter, a healer, a refuge. <\/em><\/p>\n Inside of you, live, the wounded eagles <\/em><\/p>\n that can\u2019t (yet) ascend and fly.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Like you, they too are often unnoticed. <\/em><\/p>\n Their plight, no one understands.<\/em><\/p>\n Just how deep they\u2019re wounded and scarred, <\/em><\/p>\n visible or invisible, no one can fathom.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n They\u2019re silenced,<\/em><\/p>\n their hearts, torn apart, <\/em><\/p>\n their spirits, so crushed, <\/em><\/p>\n they just survived abuse.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n From your window, as I gazed at sun\u2019s reflection, <\/em><\/p>\n radiating from calm waters of Twin Lakes, <\/em><\/p>\n I see hope, I see freedom, I see future. <\/em><\/p>\n I looked into my heart. There lives still \u2014 unfading \u2014 love.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Amid chaos, pains, terror, oppression, inequities, scorns, unknowns <\/em><\/p>\n I love my life, always did and will, <\/em><\/p>\n That, and faith \u2014 in me and in my God, is why I survived. <\/em><\/p>\n I can\u2019t wait to fly again and soar.<\/em><\/p>\n\n \u2022 Miriam Wagoner is the first transitioning survivor to live in Kaasei. <\/p>\n Wagoner, who attended the 2016 Seattle Writing Class \u2014 Writing for Story and the 2016 Pacific Northwest Writer\u2019s Association Conference, considers this poem her first published piece of creative writing.
