Concerns that a dog was shot near Lemon Creek Sunday turned out to be wildly exaggerated.

The dog was pictured in a Facebook post, with blood on its fur around its neck. But it was only fish blood, according to authorities.

“The dog is fine, the dog is home,” Karen Wood, director of animal control for the Juneau Animal Rescue, told the Empire in an interview Monday. “The dog had a fish in its mouth and rolled in fish.”

Concerned citizens who found the dog, which had escaped from its house, reported it to authorities before realizing it was fish blood, and also posted online. The dog was also wearing a collar, allowing them to contact the owner.
