Tuesday, 11 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Congratulations to the Soldotna boys and JDHS girls, the 2019 Princess Cruises Capital City Classic champions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The Stars won back-to-back two-point games on Saturday and Monday, respectively, after blowing out North Pole on Friday. Senior guard Jersey Truesdell was named boys MVP and carried the Stars to a 54-52 win over JDHS Monday night. Read about the game here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The JDHS girls were also undefeated, although their tournament played out quite differently. After securing a one-point win Friday, the Crimson Bears won Saturday and Monday contests by double digits.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

8:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS falls to Soldotna 54-52 on Mekhai Rich’s layup with 2.5 seconds left. JDHS went on a 9-2 run in the final two minutes, tying the game on Cooper Kriegmont’s layup with about 15 seconds left.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

8 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS trails Soldotna 41-34 to start the fourth. Both Chumley and Truesdell made multiple field goals for the Stars.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

7:40 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS trails Soldotna 27-20 at halftime. Jersey Truesdell leads the Stars with nine points. Truesdell ignited the Stars’ bench after swishing a long-distance 3 in the final minute. The shot came after the home team made a great sequence on defense, shifting and rotating in sync with Soldotna’s offense.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Cooper Kriegmont was whistled for his fourth foul with about three minutes to play. Kriegmont, who had seven points up to that point, sat the rest of the half.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

7:20 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

We’re all tied up at 10 after the first quarter. Jersey Truesdell shooting and passing almost single handedly helped the Stars climb out of an early 10-2 hole. He’s got five points.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

7:09 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS up 8-2 midway through the first quarter on baskets by Cooper Kriegmont, Austin McCurley and LJ Elizarde.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

7:01 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The JDHS boys now play Soldotna in the final tournament game. Soldotna can with the boys tournament with a win over JDHS.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

6:55 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS defeats Sitka 52-38 to win their first Capital City Classic in at least three years. Seniors Sadie Tuckwood and Kendyl Carson finished with 14 points apiece while Tawny Smith and Jocelyn Brady scored nine pooints each for the Lady Wolves.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

6:05 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS and Sitka trade baskets in the third as neither team significantly changes the tide of the game. JDHS leads 35-28.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

5:41 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS leads Sitka 24-18 at halftime. The Crimson Bears were held to just four points, after going up 20-10 midway through the second period. Makenna Smith knocked down a two-pointer at the buzzer for the Lady Wolves.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

5:20 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The JDHS girls lead Sitka 11-6 after the first quarter. Sadie Tuckwood with five points.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The Crimson Bears didn’t score until four minutes elapsed in the period, but scored five quick points to go up 5-4 with three minutes left. Sadie Tuckwood knocked down a 3-pointer and Jenae Pusich went coast-to-coast for a layup.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

6:45 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

We’re a little over 10 minutes until the final girls game of the Capital City Classic: JDHS vs. Sitka. JDHS will be named tournament champions with a victory tonight. JDHS went 2-0 against West Valley and East Anchorage on Friday and Saturday, respectively, whereas Sitka went 0-2.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

It will be the Crimson Bears and Lady Wolves’ first meeting of the season. JDHS went 2-1 against Sitka last season.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

JDHS senior Kendyl Carson scored 26 points in her first game as a Crimson Bear in three years, Friday’s exciting 62-61 win over West Valley. The senior point, who made the game-tying and go-ahead free throw on Friday, played the last two years for Prairie High School in Washington.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

6:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Haines defeats Soldotna 62-22 and will anxiously await the winner of the JDHS-Soldotna game at 7 p.m. If JDHS defeats Soldotna, then Haines wins the tournament. (Soldotna and Haines would each finish with 2-1 records, but since Haines defeated JDHS, they would own the tiebreaker).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

When Haines last played in the Classic three years ago, they lost to JDHS 71-43.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

3:55 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Haines leads North Pole 49-18 after three.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

3:48 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

North Pole calls time down 42-16 with about three minutes left in the third. The Patriots have made just three baskets since the start of the second quarter.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

3:28 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Haines ups its lead to 36-12 at halftime. The Glacier Bears have been getting open looks inside the paint by being patient on offense. Their passing really stands out as it’s very rare a pass doesn’t hit its intended target.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Senior Kirby Faverty has roughly half the Glacier Bears’ points. He does everything on the court — rebounding and passing in particular — very well.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

3:20 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Haines leads North Pole 22-10 after the first quarter.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

3:10 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Should Haines and JDHS each win today, Haines will be the 2019 Capital City Classic boys champions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

3 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The Haines Glacier Bears are about to take on the North Pole Patriots in the second to last boys games of the tournament. The Glacier Bears have been awesome from 3-point range, making 13 3-pointers in a win over Juneau-Douglas: Yadaat.at Kalé on Friday and 10 3-pointers in a loss to Soldotna on Saturday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Ali May scored 25 points and Sheridan Blasey scored 15 points for West Valley. Kristi Anderson led East with 27 points.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

2:20 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

West Valley finish 2-1 in the Capital City Classic following a 68-49 victory over East Anchorage. West Valley head coach Milo Griffin said the team’s still getting back in shape.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

“It’s hard to get in shape when you don’t have many games. These games will help us a lot,” Griffin said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

2:08 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

West Valley outscored East Anchorage by 11 points in the third to take a 54-37 lead to start the fourth.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

1:35 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The West Valley Wolfpack go on a 10-3 run to take a 28-22 halftime lead. May’s fastbreak layup gave the Wolfpack their largest lead of the game at 28-19 with about one minute left.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

1:20 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

East leads West Valley 11-8 after the first quarter. East guard Melanie Leon banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

It’s been an entertaining Princess Cruises Capital City Classic so far, with the Juneau-Douglas: Yadaat.at Kalé girls and Soldotna boys each one win away from winning their respective tournaments. JDHS defeated West Valley Friday and East Anchorage Saturday. Tonight, they’ll play Sitka.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Soldotna defeated North Pole and Haines, and now face JDHS tonight.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

The Haines boys have been a surprise. The Glacier Bears defeated large school challenger JDHS 83-73 on Friday, and narrowly lost to Soldotna 68-66 on Saturday after their last-gasp 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t

Haines closes out the tournament against North Pole today.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t
