Juneau Audubon Society scratched most of its spring and early summer events, but Juneauites are still invited to participate in a worldwide data collection effort.

Saturday will be the Global Big Day and 2020 Bird-A-Thon.

The GBD is a worldwide event that includes bird watching and data collection, which can be done while socially distanced. It’s also an opportunity for JAS to raise funds with proceeds split evenly between the organization and Southeast Alaska Food Bank, according to JAS.

To become a birder, people must be in Southeast Alaska, have an eBird account through eBird.org and learn how to submit a checklist. EBird is a worldwide bird checklist program offered through Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology. Birders are encouraged to ask for pledges prior to the event.

Then, on May 9, people can bird watch from their backyard for 10 minutes or hit the trails for hours and report what they see, according to JAS. Results should be submitted to eBird no later than 5 p.m. Sunday.
