City and Borough of Juneau reported on Thursday its largest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases in over a week.

The city’s emergency operations center announced eight new cases. Two of the cases were reported on Wednesday and six were reported on Thursday, the city said in a news release. The last time the city reported more than five new cases for a single day was Sept. 25 when seven new cases were reported.

Public Health attributes one of the cases reported on Wednesday to close contact with a known case. All other cases are under investigation, according to the city. Two of the people who tested positive for COVID-19 are at Lemon Creek Correctional Center, according to the city. All known active cases are isolating.

So far, at least six people recently diagnosed with COVID-19 are among Juneau’s vulnerable populations, according to the city. The emergency operations center is conducting regular testing of people in vulnerable populations at various emergency housing facilities.
