Current events bring me back to Sept. 11, 2001, and the U.S. post-9\/11 response.<\/p>\n
On April 28, 2003, the CBJ Assembly adopted Resolution Serial Number 2201<\/a> which, in summary, was critical of The Patriot Act.<\/p>\n At the time I was skeptical of the Assembly resolution.<\/p>\n Now, as I look back, I appreciate the stand our Assembly took in defense of civil liberties and freedoms as afforded by the US Constitution.<\/p>\n While the CBJ Assembly gesture was symbolic, I cannot emphasize enough the role that local government plays with regard to safeguarding its citizens from tyranny of all types.<\/p>\n I invite everyone to read this resolution, which is still online.<\/p>\n In closing I would suggest to local government at all levels that you never underestimate the role you play, and that you never let your role be usurped.<\/p>\n Theresa Ullmayer,<\/em><\/p>\n Juneau Resident<\/em><\/p>\n • Columns, My Turns and Letters to the Editor represent the view of the author, not the view of the Juneau Empire.
