{"id":6726,"date":"2015-12-29T09:01:18","date_gmt":"2015-12-29T17:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/weather-front-brings-high-winds-to-alaska\/"},"modified":"2015-12-29T09:01:18","modified_gmt":"2015-12-29T17:01:18","slug":"weather-front-brings-high-winds-to-alaska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/weather-front-brings-high-winds-to-alaska\/","title":{"rendered":"Weather front brings high winds to Alaska"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANCHORAGE \u2014<\/strong> Meteorologists say a weather front is bringing high winds and warmer temperatures to much of Alaska, with extreme conditions prompting the closure of a state-operated tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>State transportation officials say high wind conditions led to the indefinite closure of the Whittier tunnel on Portage Highway Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>National Weather Service meteorologist Rebecca Duell says winds near the tunnel were blowing at 41 mph, gusting to 91 mph.<\/p>\n<p>Duell says the Delta Junction area also is hard-hit, with sustained winds blowing at 45 mph and gusting to 62 mph.<\/p>\n<p>The weather front also was bringing warmer temperatures, with highs in the Anchorage area ranging between the mid-30s and low 40s, compared to the normal high of 24.<\/p>\n<p>In the Fairbanks area, temperatures were in the low 20s compared to the normal high of 3 degrees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANCHORAGE \u2014 Meteorologists say a weather front is bringing high winds and warmer temperatures to much of Alaska, with extreme conditions prompting the closure of a state-operated tunnel.
