Temperatures outside fall toward minus four.<\/p>\n
Inside we sit in a brightly lit warm room<\/p>\n
as the TV drowns out the hum of the furnace.<\/p>\n
Then, the room plunges into silence and blackness.<\/p>\n
We begin the drill. Locate flashlights,<\/p>\n
light candles, fire the woodstove.<\/p>\n
We know somewhere wind-whipped workers<\/p>\n
in elevated buckets search the system<\/p>\n
for downed lines and exploded transformers.<\/p>\n
As the outage approaches an hour, I glance<\/p>\n
at my watch more often, worry when<\/p>\n
to trickle faucets and restock firewood.<\/p>\n
I chide myself once again for my failure<\/p>\n
to test our kerosene heater since Y2K.<\/p>\n
Then, light floods back. I take a deep breath.<\/p>\n
The TV flickers on, the clocks chirp to be reset.<\/p>\n
I walk to the basement door to assure myself<\/p>\n
the furnace has rumbled to life. Comfort returns.<\/p>\n
I mute TV just to savor music of purring furnace.<\/p>\n
