{"id":81862,"date":"2022-02-14T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T07:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/letters\/opinion-policymakers-should-do-research-take-thoughtful-approach-to-pfas-regulation\/"},"modified":"2022-02-15T12:58:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T21:58:18","slug":"opinion-policymakers-should-do-research-take-thoughtful-approach-to-pfas-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/letters\/opinion-policymakers-should-do-research-take-thoughtful-approach-to-pfas-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Opinion: Policymakers should do research, take thoughtful approach to PFAS regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regarding the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/opinion\/opinion-the-alaska-legislators-needs-to-take-action-to-protect-every-alaskan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My Turn urging the Legislature to swiftly regulate the use of PFAS compounds in the state<\/a>, we urge policymakers to first consider all current scientific research and weigh the costs and benefits to public health and the economy before taking drastic action.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis of the most widely cited existing research on PFAS, published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Research, highlights a number of important limitations that should be resolved.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key components of this effort is additional research to better define the risks that exposure to PFAS compounds present to humans. This article provides a roadmap by outlining very specific studies that need to be conducted before we can develop effective regulatory policies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Margaret M.
