On Nov. 3, 1986, the 28 Juneau members of the Alaska Performing Arts for Peace who traveled to Russia arrived in Juneau on Sunday night, happy to call the event a success. The trip, which was organized by Dixie Belcher, included Juneau\u2019s local harmony group the St. Paul Singers, Eskimo dancers from Chevak, Savoonga and Gambell, rock performers from Anchorage, and more.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a City and Borough of Juneau committee recommended the Assembly lower the fee to hook up to the municipal water system to between $125 and $200. The committee planned to present a report on the topic in December, which was to include the suggestion to compensate owners who had paid the more expensive amount.<\/p>\n
With only a day left until the election, Alaskan voters prepared to elect their next governor. Democratic contender and Fairbanks lawyer Steve Cowper was up against Republican-backed Sen. Arliss Sturgulewski to take over Gov. Bill Sheffield\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n
