Many of those floats won awards from the Juneau and the Douglas parade committees. Annual competitions for sandcastle sculpting, field events and watermelon eating also produced winners.<\/p>\n

Anthony Yengo<\/p>\n Sandcastle competition benefits from ‘ideal’ conditions <\/p>\n The annual Douglas Sandcastle Challenge was judged by Architect Zane Jones of MRV Architects, chair of the Southeast Alaska Section of the American Insititute of Architects.<\/p>\n Conditions were “ideal” for sandcastles, Jones wrote in an email to the Empire, as an outgoing tide left just enough water in the sand to make sand stick together. Plenty of sunshine made it a perfect day at the beach.<\/p>\n “If it weren’t for the snow-capped peaks, eagles and salmon fishing boat driving by, you would think we were on a beach in Southern California,” Jones wrote.<\/p>\n Awards and judge’s notes<\/p>\n Overall Winner and Peoples Choice<\/p>\n “Bear,” by Lee Stoops. Judge’s note: This was easily the crowd-pleaser and sure was cute. The lounging bear with playful cub captured the hearts of every Alaskan passing by.<\/p>\n Judges Choice Award<\/p>\n “Solstice,” by Fisher Stevens. Judge’s note: The mermaid with fabulous bright green mossy hair that Solstice wore perfectly. Solstice was very patient and pleasant while being buried in sand and adorned with fresh bright green moss for hair to create an adorable mermaid. Some jewelry and carefully drawn scales made this a hit.<\/p>\n Honorable Mention<\/p>\n “Life is Short You Otter Be Happy,” by the Fontenot Family. Judge’s notes: Three generations of collaboration went into this very Alaskan design. Passersby left with a chuckle at the irony of the adorable otters being pursued by an orca fin. Seeing the Fontenot family admiring their work under their picnic umbrella makes me sure they embraced the moment.<\/p>\n Best use of Beach Material<\/p>\n “Salmon & Eagle,” by Jaiden and Piper of the Walden family. Judge’s notes: They really captured the Alaskan drama.<\/p>\n Best Eyes and Most Ambitious<\/p>\n “Don’t Be Crabby,” by Brooke Sanford and Rachel Trusslell.
