A tourist visiting Juneau aboard a cruise ship experienced a medical emergency and died Wednesday around noon while at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.

The visitor, a 72-year-old man and U.S. resident, was with his wife at the time, said Juneau Police Department public safety manager Erann Kalwara.

“The call came in at 11:48 yesterday that there was a man who was unconscious in the glacier observatory. At that time, he was believed to be breathing,” Kalwara said in a phone interview. “Fire units got on scene about 15 minutes later and began CPR.”

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, and the death is not considered suspicious, Kalwara said, though the specific cause of death is unknown. Capital City Fire./Rescue was not involved in transporting the body, said Assistant Chief Ed Quinto. The deceased man’s wife worked with guest services aboard the cruise ship to make arrangements, Kalwara said.
