{"id":86502,"date":"2022-05-30T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/coast-guard-rescues-two-near-auke-bay-over-weekend\/"},"modified":"2022-05-30T10:30:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T18:30:00","slug":"coast-guard-rescues-two-near-auke-bay-over-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/coast-guard-rescues-two-near-auke-bay-over-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard rescues two near Auke Bay over weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Coast Guard vessel rescued a pair of kayakers near Spuhn Island on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>At approximately 1:30 p.m., Juneau Police Department dispatch informed Sector Juneau watchstanders that it had received a call that a two-person kayak with two people aboard was taking on water, according to a Coast Guard news release.<\/p>\n<p>Sector Juneau sortied a 45-foot Response Boat- Medium, which arrived on scene at approximately 1:45 p.m. and transported both kayakers to their vehicle, located at False Outer Point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/alaska-seaplanes-wrangells-up-a-new-route\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><ins>[Alaska Seaplanes Wrangells up a new route]<\/ins><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Both people in this case were wearing their life jackets and had communication equipment with them,&rdquo; said Sector Juneau command duty officer Lt. Jonathan Dillard in the news release. &ldquo;With the influx of maritime activity during this Memorial Day weekend, we were glad to see the proper use of safe boating equipment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the rescue, conditions on the scene were 5 knot winds, 2-3 foot seas, air temperature at 50 degrees and water temperature at 48 degrees, according to the news release.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8226; Contact reporter Michael S.
