{"id":8679,"date":"2016-03-29T08:02:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-29T15:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/small-fire-causes-more-than-8000-in-damage-to-uas-sitka-office\/"},"modified":"2016-03-29T08:02:36","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T15:02:36","slug":"small-fire-causes-more-than-8000-in-damage-to-uas-sitka-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/small-fire-causes-more-than-8000-in-damage-to-uas-sitka-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Small fire causes more than $8,000 in damage to UAS Sitka office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SITKA<\/strong> \u2014 A fire damaged a small office at University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus Thursday night before it was put out by firefighters, the Sitka Fire Department said.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Fire Chief Al Stevens said no one was injured, and when firefighters arrived they were able to contain the fire within one minute.<\/p>\n<p>The fire occurred in the office of the Fisheries Technology program on the first floor of the college building on Japonski Island.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens is investigating the cause of the fire, which started under a desk. He said he believes it was caused by an overloaded surge protector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still investigating it,\u201d he said. \u201cThe surge protector is the area of origin. &#8230; The cause remains unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 911 call came in to the fire hall at 7:19 p.m. from someone on campus who saw smoke, and heard a \u201cpopping\u201d sound coming from inside the closed office. The smoke detector went off, but the sprinklers had not yet activated, which would have caused more damage, said Stevens.<\/p>\n<p>He estimated fire and smoke damage at $8,000 to $10,000. \u201cThe whole room got toasted,\u201d Stevens said.<\/p>\n<p>Two fire trucks and 17 firefighters responded to the call. Firefighters ran a hose into the building, opened the door and quickly extinguished the flames, Stevens said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fire didn\u2019t have a chance to grow. &#8230; It was seconds from the sprinklers activating, which would\u2019ve caused further water damage,\u201d he commented.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SITKA \u2014 A fire damaged a small office at University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus Thursday night before it was put out by firefighters, the Sitka Fire Department said.
