{"id":95147,"date":"2023-02-05T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-06T07:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/police-investigate-suspicious-package-at-gastineau-elementary-school\/"},"modified":"2023-02-05T22:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-06T07:30:00","slug":"police-investigate-suspicious-package-at-gastineau-elementary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/police-investigate-suspicious-package-at-gastineau-elementary-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Police investigate suspicious package at Gastineau Elementary School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police say a suspicious package found Monday afternoon outside Say&#233;ik: Gastineau Community School did not pose a threat after the school on Douglas Island was under a short lockdown.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3D514408594161718%26id%3D100067777457015&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"239\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Prior to that announcement, Juneau Police Department stated in a social media post the school was in lockdown and children were released on the side of the building while police investigated the package and JPD&rsquo;s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to evaluate and remove the package.<\/p>\n<p>According to JPD spokesperson Erann Kalwara, the report was made at 2:20 p.m. Monday and several officers responded to close off traffic near the area as a precautionary measure.<\/p>\n<p>In an updated post, JPD stated school activities had resumed to normal operations and the area is open to the public and police determined around 3:30 p.m. that the suspicious package was not a threat and no injuries were reported.<\/p>\n<p>Juneau School District Chief of Staff Kristin Bartlett was not immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8226; Contact reporter Clarise Larson at clarise.larson@juneauempire.com or (651)-528-1807.
