{"id":9565,"date":"2015-11-22T09:05:47","date_gmt":"2015-11-22T17:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spijue.wpengine.com\/news\/4-time-iditarod-champ-lance-mackey-registers-for-2016-race\/"},"modified":"2015-11-22T09:05:47","modified_gmt":"2015-11-22T17:05:47","slug":"4-time-iditarod-champ-lance-mackey-registers-for-2016-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/sports\/4-time-iditarod-champ-lance-mackey-registers-for-2016-race\/","title":{"rendered":"4-time Iditarod champ Lance Mackey registers for 2016 race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FAIRBANKS \u2014<\/strong> Four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey is getting ready for the 2016 race.<\/p>\n<p>Mackey said he decided to race after consulting with his doctor, The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.<\/p>\n<p>He said a surgery set for next month will remove a painful nail and nail bed.<\/p>\n<p>Mackey won four straight Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Races after surviving throat cancer. He has also won the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press reported in March that along with losing many teeth as a result of cancer treatment, Mackey\u2019s circulation is limited in his hands and feet by Raynaud\u2019s syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2015 competition, he experienced circulation problems in his hands. Two of his dogs died in that race.<\/p>\n<p>The Iditarod website says the long-distance dog musher on Friday became the 77th competitor to register for the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a really strong team that\u2019s going to be hard to beat,\u201d Mackey said.<\/p>\n<p>Mackey recently returned from a film tour that took him from Los Angeles to Duluth, Minnesota and then to New York to promote a documentary on his showing in the 2013 Iditarod, \u201cThe Great Alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His brother Jason Mackey signed up for the race on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Mushers have until Dec. 1 to register for the 2015 Iditarod.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRBANKS \u2014 Four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey is getting ready for the 2016 race.
