THE HOUSE THAT GRUENING BUILT <\/p>\n

The plaque on the wall had told us, that a statesman built this fine place.<\/p>\n
On the mantle lay books about Gruening. In mind\u2019s eye I\u2019m seeing his face.<\/p>\n
Here the Governor drafted papers, powerful words of mystery,<\/p>\n
for they made Alaska into a state, and for us – that\u2019s now history.<\/p>\n
I imagine Ernest holding a pen, while Dorothy sketches the view,<\/p>\n
of mountains and sea through bay windows, the same glass that now I gaze through.<\/p>\n
The Gruening\u2019s cabin is now used by artists, and with its lands become a State Park,<\/p>\n
where artists can stay in the evening, while outdoors it\u2019s cold, wet, and dark.<\/p>\n
Sketching on canvas in charcoal, and splashing colors acrylic and oil,<\/p>\n
I paint to preserve the sunsets that darkness of night will spoil.<\/p>\n
Animals in abundance, everywhere we could see,<\/p>\n
There were eagles alighting on branches, and a bear playing behind the next tree.<\/p>\n
Tall conifers above well-groomed paths, where red squirrels gathered their cones,<\/p>\n
seals frolicking in waves below us, where seabirds picked among stones.<\/p>\n
State Park staff friendly and gracious, we now fondly recall,<\/p>\n
for they brought us fuel for our fire, drinking water, and all.<\/p>\n
Three weeks we spent in that cabin,<\/p>\n
another coming, and one back home again.<\/p>\n
We\u2019d threaded byways through Alaska – and then through Canada twice,<\/p>\n
Reading poems by Service on mountains, and past rivers of glacier ice.<\/p>\n
Our chariot brought us home again safely, though damaged and a broken window,<\/p>\n
From an accidental meeting in Skagway, and a tumbling rock near Juneau.<\/p>\n
Our story is now laid before you, and the artworks hang on a wall,<\/p>\n
We give thanks to our hosts in Alaska, who preserve parks to benefit of all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
