Indictments handed down for assault, gun charge, theft

Man with felony convictions in Juneau found with four guns in Haines, police say

A Juneau grand jury handed down indictments during the previous two weeks, including charges of domestic violence, weapons misconduct and theft.

On July 17, the grand jury indicted a 62-year-old man for one count of second-degree assault and two counts of third-degree assault, according to the indictment. The charges stem from an alleged assault in the early hours of July 17 in which the man choked a woman so hard she had to go to the hospital, according to a police report from Juneau Police Department Officer Kirt Stage-Harvey.

In an interview with Stage-Harvey, the victim told him that she had gone over to the man’s house to use the shower, and that the man had choked her. Stage-Harvey wrote that the man claimed the woman had stolen his wallet, but that the woman did not have a wallet or any other property in her possession.

Judson D. Morgan, 32, was indicted on July 16 for four counts of third-degree weapons misconduct, each for a different gun that was in his possession. Morgan has four second-degree burglary convictions and a second-degree theft conviction, according to charging documents, and all six of those convictions were in Juneau.

According to a report from the Haines Borough Police Department, a caller reported that Morgan was at his home with multiple firearms. Morgan had an outstanding warrant at the time, according to charging documents, and police came to the home. Officers heard the sound of a round being chambered into a gun, according to the police report, and officers ended up in a 50-minute standoff with the man in the home.

The man was later identified as Morgan, and was eventually arrested on the parole warrant, police say. Police searched Morgan’s home, according to the police report, and found a 9mm revolver, a .44 magnum pistol and two .357 magnum revolvers. He has 20 total previous convictions, according to charging documents, including four for violating conditions of release.

Christopher Manuel Diaz, 27, was indicted this past Thursday for one count of second-degree theft, which is a class C felony. According to the report of JPD Officer Ken Colon, a woman and her two young children waved Colon down near the downtown library on June 21, 2018 to report the theft.

The woman told Colon that Diaz had grabbed a portable Bluetooth speaker from her hand, which hurt a pre-existing injury to her left hand, Colon wrote. The District Attorney’s Office brought charges of second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault, but the Juneau grand jury indicted Diaz on one charge of second-degree theft, according to charging documents.

The grand jury also indicted Ronald W. Houston, 26, for one count of felony driving under the influence for an offense dating back to Sept. 2, 2015. According to the indictment, Houston was driving under the influence of a controlled substance as he drove near Juneau on that date. A felony DUI is a class C felony.
