Running for historic lighthouse’s repair

Headlamps came in handy during a darkened community run along the Juneau Seawalk on Saturday afternoon.

That was race organizer Sue York’s plan all along.

Run 4 the Rock 5K and One Mile run started a half hour after sunset and gave a nod those who kept a different kind of lamp — Eldred Rock Lighthouse — shining for much of the 20th century. The Eldred Rock Lighthouse Preservation Association sponsored the run. Since 2014, the nonprofit has been working to shape up its 113-year old namesake, and it’s not going to be an easy job.

“We all pass the lighthouse on the ferry, and it looks beautiful from a distance, but it’s actually in really bad shape,” York, the executive director of the lighthouse association, said. “So our association is in the process of gaining a lease from the United States Coast Guard. Once we get that lease signed, we will be going out there with work parties and a lot of volunteers and restoring it so that it’s safe for the public.”

The event attracted over 70 participants. Ellie Cullum won the 1-mile run in 11 minutes, 58 seconds, and Hiram Henry took the 5K with a 19:34.

“The weather being clear was a huge reason I think we had a good turnout,” York said. “Even though it was cold, the boardwalk was nice and crunchy instead of icy.”

Another run, dubbed the Foghorn Race, is slated for April 20. Foghorns were used to ward off ships from hitting the rock.

Eldred Rock Lighthouse was staffed for over 60 years, from 1906-1973, according to an online blog. The lighthouse is located on the northern end of Lynn Canal, about 20 miles southeast of Haines. To learn more about Eldred Rock Lighthouse or to join the ERLPA, go to eldredrocklighthouse.org.
