Alaska State Council awards Southeast organizations

This June, the Alaska State Council on the Arts awarded $543,262 in grants to Alaska artists and arts organizations in its first funding quarter of the 2017 fiscal year in addition to ratifying $13,184 in grants awarded in the last part of 2016.

Recipients of various operating grants located specifically in Southeast Alaska are the Alaska Arts Education Consortium in Juneau, which was awarded $9,600; Greater Sitka Arts Council was awarded $3,150; Juneau Alaska Music Matters business, which also was recently awarded a Mayor’s Award for the Arts, will receive $3,000; Juneau Dance Theatre Inc. was awarded $3,500; Sealaska Heritage Institute was awarded $3,000; First City Players in Ketchikan was awarded $8,250; Juneau Jazz & Classics was awarded $8,910; Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council was awarded $14,800; Perseverance Theatre, Inc. was awarded $21,000; Alaska Arts Southeast, Inc. in Sitka was awarded $17,500; Juneau Arts & Humanities Council was awarded $14,553; Juneau Symphony was awarded $8,320; and Sitka Summer Music Festival was awarded $9,441. For “Career Opportunity Grants” Kathleen Light of Ketchikan was awarded $570; Kathryn Russo of Ketchikan was awarded $840; and Roger Schmidt of Sitka was awarded $1,000. For workshop grants, Gustavus Community Center was awarded $395; Ketchikan Theatre Ballet $2,000; REACH, Inc. for The Canvas $3,000; Sitka Historical Society, Inc. $1,000; The Island Institute, Inc. of Sitka $4,500; Turning the Tides for Keys To Life in Juneau $2,000. For special project grants, the Anchorage Museum Association in Metlakatla received $10,000; carvers Zachary James (apprentice) with Wayne Price (master) of Haines have been awarded $2,000 (both have been working on the dugout canoes that will travel from Hoonah to Glacier Bay for the Aug. 25 tribal house dedication, along with James Hart and Steven Price); Chatham School District in Angoon, $3,000; Juneau Arts & Humanities Council of Juneau, $15,000; Yakutat School District, $2,900.

Special Projects Grants: Alaska Arts Education Consortium, Juneau, $3,000; Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, $8,000; Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council, $1,000.

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is funded by the Alaska State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, with support for arts education grants from the Rasmuson Foundation. All grant funding is contingent on the State of Alaska’s appropriation.
