Annual Trail Mix auction to benefit Treadwell Trail bridges

The public is invited to attend Trail Mix Inc.’s annual dinner and auction happening at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the building of four or five new bridges on the Treadwell Ditch Trail, as well as improved reroute where the Bonnie Brae spur accesses the trail.

The Douglas Island trail stretches 16 miles from Douglas to Eaglecrest Ski Area. Historically, this pathway ran next to a complex waterway built by miners in 1889 to shuttle water from the Fish Creek drainage to the Treadwell Mines, south of Douglas. Today, roughly half of the trail has seen upgrades, but a large portion still suffers from collapsed bridges, washed out swaths and erosion.

This year, Trail Mix finished improving Outer Point Trail, making it handicapped accessible; finished working on phase 2 (the first mile and a half) of Peterson Lake Trail, and continued improvements to North Bridget Cove Trail, which leads to Camping Cove Cabin.

“We’ve got a lot more projects up ahead,” said executive director Erik Boraas. The organization hopes to raise around $15,000 at the auction.

This year’s fundraising event will feature catering by The Baranof, and more than 100 live and silent auction items, including an Uncruise trip, two tickets on Alaska airlines, flightseeing tours, and donated items handmade by members, like hand-turned wooden bowls.

Tickets are $35 for Trail Mix members, $50 for non-members, $10 for kids aged two to 12; they can be purchased at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, Hearthside Books, Rainy Retreat Books and on the Trail Mix website.
