Auke Bay biz receives sustainable certification, Four As gets new executive director

Auke Bay business recognized for responsible tourism

An Auke Bay business was one of 23 Alaska businesses recognized this week for responsible tourism practices.

Above and Beyond Alaska was certified by Adventure Green Alaska, a program of the Alaska Travel Industry Association that is the only sustainable tourism certification program for tourism businesses operating in the state.

AGA-certified businesses are recognized for best management practices and responsible operations, meeting rigorous standards of economic, environmental, and social sustainability.

Other newly certified businesses in Southeast are Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary in Ketchikan, Burro Creek in Skagway, Lighthouse Excursions in Ward Cove, Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, Taquan Air in Ketchikan and White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad in Skagway. Rainbow Glacier Adventures in Haines was re-certified.

Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association welcomes new executive director

Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association (Four As) is announced this week that Robin Lutz is the organization’s new executive director.

Lutz comes to Four As with over 15 years of experience in HIV community-based organizations, including her most recent role with the New York State Department of Health. She brings a comprehensive understanding of the changing climate for AIDS service organizations, recognition of the life-saving benefits of harm reduction, and a commitment to Alaskans living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, according to a release.

“I am returning to Alaska with my family after working with the New York State Department of Health, AIDS Institute on HIV care management and harm reduction Medicaid policy,” Lutz said in a statement. ” I am thrilled to join the Four As community as we work together towards fulfilling our mission.”

The Four As is a nonprofit headquartered in Anchorage, with locations in Anchorage and Juneau. It was established in 1985 as a support organization for those living with HIV/AIDS. Four As is the state’s leading HIV/AIDS focused agency serving the state in two core areas: supportive services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families and HIV education, prevention and harm reduction.

Juneau student named to Dean’s List

Lillian Haggard, from Juneau was among the students named to Augustana College’s 2019-20 fall semester Dean’s List. Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences in Rock Island, Illinois.
