Sitka author John Straley will be in Juneau later this month for two public presentations.
On Nov. 12, he will present “The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but a Story: The Art of Writing Historical Fiction,” at 7 p.m. at the Hangar Ballroom as part of the Friends of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum’s public annual meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. His presentation will include readings of his work featuring a Juneau history theme. This is a free event to FoJDCM members; a donation of $5 per person from nonmembers is requested.
On Friday, Nov. 13, Straley will take part in the 360 North Writers Showcase in the KTOO building. This event will feature several short stories and essays, and will be filmed live in front of the studio audience. Doors open at 6:30 and cameras roll at 7 p.m. Admission is free, and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. At the end of the one-hour recording, attendees will have a chance to meet the actors and the writers. Straley will also be signing books.
Straley has worked as a fiction writer and criminal defense investigator for more than 30 years. His first book, “The Woman Who Married a Bear,” was published in 1993 and won the Shamus Award for the Best First Mystery. Five more titles in that series followed, ending with “Cold Water Burning” in 2001. In November 2006, Straley was appointed Alaska’s 12th Writer Laureate, a position he held through 2008. That same year, he published the “Big Both Ways,” and in 2014, “Cold Storage, Alaska.”
He has also published a book of poetry, “The Rising and the Rain.”
