Craig Salzillo Memorial Trap Shoot results

On April 30 about 12 percent of the membership of the Juneau Gun Club and its Juneau Youth Team (23 members), paid tribute to fallen member Craig Salzillo in a memorial trap shoot. Salzillo, a 5-year club member who became very active in the last three years as a youth team coach and club director, suddenly passed in late January while working as a carpenter.

In Salzillo’s honor, a three-event trap shoot was held with each participant shooting 50 times during each of the event competitions. The events were Singles where target clay birds were released 16 yards from the shooters five different posts; Handicap, where the targets are released 18, 20 or 23 yards from the trap shooters five different posts and Doubles, where two targets are released from the trap house 16 yards from the five different shooters posts in opposite directions. The results from the competition were:

Singles, 23 entries, light rain. Fred Wilson, event champion, 48/50; class “a” winner, Eric Verrelli, 45/50; “b” class winner, Mike Cable, 44/50; Forrest Bowers, 43/50; “c”class winner, Chip Verrelli, 44/50; Rick Bozarth, 43/50; Steve Kikendall, 42/50; and Mal Menzies, 39/50; “c” class winner, Vic Winters, 44/100; Mark Morris, 41/50; Ben Peyerk 41/50; Mark Kappler, 43/50; Robert Greg, 41/50 and Ben Williams, 33/50 and Quin Smith, 28/50.

Junior winner, Brice Norton, 42/50; John Morris, 40/50; Nolan Ramseth 39/100; Maele Allen, 37/50 and Garratt Hermann, 21/50; sub junior winner, Losefa Allen, 26/50; Mia Hines, 15/50 and Kiana Allen, 2/50.

Handicap, 21 entries, light to moderate rain with light wind. Event champion was Eric Verrelli at 46/50. Short yardage shooters: class winner, Robert Gregg, 44/50; Mike Cable, 43/100; Chip Verrelli, 43/50; Forrest Bowers, 41/50; Fred Wilson, 39/50; Mark Kappler, 39/50; Vic Winters, 38/50; Ben Peyerk 38/50; Mark Morris 36/50; Ben Williams, 33/50; Steve Kikendall, 32/50; Rick Bozarth, 32/50 and Quin Smith, 22/50.

Mid yardage shooter: class winner, Mal Menzies, 44/50. Junior shooters: hi junior class winner, John Morris, 44/50; Brice Norton, 38/50; Nolan Ramseth, 33/50; Garret Hermann, 26/50 and Maele Allen, 22/50. Sub junior shooter and hi lady winner: mia hines, 19/50.

Doubles, 21 entries, light rain which eventually ended, light wind. Event champion: Mal Menzies, 44/50; “b” class winner, Forrest Bowers, 41/50; “c” class winner, Eric Verrelli, 39/50; Chip Verrelli, 38/50; Steve Kikendall, 31/50; “d”class winner, Ben Peyerk, 38/50; Mike Cable, 37/50; Vic Winters, 36/50; Fred Wilson, 36/50; Quin Smith, 31/50; Robert Greg, 31/50; Mark Morris, 22/50; Mark Kappler, 22/50 and Ben Williams, 8/50. Junior shooters: hi-junior winner, John Morris, 37/50; Garret Hermann, 31/50; Brice Norton, 29/50; Maele Allen, 27/50 and Nolan Ramseth, 26/50; sub junior shooter and hi lady winner, Mia Hines, 18/50.

High overall score: Eric Verrelli at 130/150 (86.7 percent).

High overall, runner-up: Mal Menzies. 127/150 (84.7 percent).

A ceremonial and Memorial Hat Shoot was conducted for Salzillo after the Trap Event.

Many of the Trap shooters attended a celebration of life service for Salzillo at Juneau’s Yacht Club after the Memorial Shoot.
