This past Wednesday, students across the state, including those at Gastineau Elementary School, participated in International Walk to School Day.
The day, which was expected to include more than 5,000 events across all 50 states, is meant to promote safe pedestrian skills and alertness from motorists near schools. Alaska Department of Transportation &Public Facilities Safe Routes to School Coordinator Marcheta Moulton joined the students as they walked to Gastineau School, reminding walkers to wear reflective clothing and to be alert.
Walk to School Day also promotes safer routes for walking and biking to school, increasing physical activity among children, concern for the environment, easing traffic congestion and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
