First Friday, July 6: New jewelry, yoga and more

First Friday is not only a great way to kick off the weekend, but the month too. For July, there’s everything from jewelry makers to yoga to a talk on the sinking of the S.S. Princess Sophia.

Talk on the S.S. Princess Sophia

Titanic of the North: The 1918 Wreck of the S.S. Princess Sophia continues at the Alaska State Museum. Free admission 4:30-7 p.m. with a reception sponsored by the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum.

At 6 p.m., join Brittany Vis, Associate Director of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia to go deeper into the exhibit, which originated in Victoria in January. Vis will highlight select stories of individuals on board, explore the immediate aftermath of the tragedy including the recovery efforts and court proceedings, and share images of artifacts and historic photographs that have been donated to the Maritime Museum since the launch of the exhibit.

The Juneau Arts and Culture Center

4:30-7 p.m.

The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council and the Canvas Community Art Studio proudly present “Raven” by artist Todd Wright. “Raven” is a testament to Wright’s deeply rooted Tlingit heritage and will be on display through the month of July in the JAHC Gallery.

Wright develops an image through continuous layering of markers, paint, and pencils of all colors. At first glance, his work may seem chaotic, but with closer inspection, recognizable features and figures begin to reveal themselves to the viewer.

Sound Bath with Kristi Seater

Rainforest Yoga

174 S. Franklin St. suite 202B

5:15-6:15 p.m.

Come experience being washed in the vibration of sound created with crystal bowls. A sound session can help with stress, anxiety, sleep, pain, energy balance and create a state of deep relaxation and meditation. Kristi is a Holistic Integrative Practitioner.

Juneau Artists Gallery

175 South Franklin St.

4:30-7 p.m.

Toby Harbanuk of Alaska Imagery is the featured artist for the month of July at the Juneau Artists Gallery. He will be featuring new aerial photos as well as signing his Alaska photo books. He has invested in the equipment to print his photos on metal that give them a particularly vivid quality. He also manufactures all of his glass cutting boards in Juneau.

Homeworld Jewelry Pop Up Shop

Kindred Post

145 S. Franklin St.

4:30-7 p.m.

Local artist Tanya McAllister is happy to present a pop up shop of her jewelry line, Homeworld Jewelry. This collection of ceramic wearable art (made right here in Juneau) celebrates summer with whale and antler necklaces featuring summery flowers. Plus, a few adorable succulent planters.

The Canvas

4:30-7 p.m.

Through porcelain, wood, acrylics, and resin, “Clusters” is inspired by the romantic undertones of our cosmic significance, and dives into how all things in our universe are connected and intertwined with one another.

Featured artist: Arnie Weimer

Coppa

4-6 p.m.

Weimer will display recent works, from watercolors and acrylics to some plein air.

Featured artists: Sam Sheakley and Rhonda Butler

Sealaska Heritage, Walter Soboleff Building

105 S. Seward St.

Reception: 4:30-8 p.m.

Sealaska Heritage will feature two artists at the Walter Soboleff Building: Tlingit jeweler Sam Sheakley, who will demonstrate silver carving and show his latest work, and Haida artist Rhonda Butler, who will have healing salves, moccasins, and cedar work. SHI will also offer free admission to its two exhibits, the “2018 Juried Art Show & Competition,” featuring 40 works by 30 Northwest Coast artists, and “Our Grandparents’ Names on the Land,” an interactive exhibit that explores Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian place names and traditional fishing technologies. All are welcome.

Amalga Distillery

134 N. Franklin St.

4:30-8 p.m.

Visiting artists Cara Murray and Roberto Salas will be showing their work “Symbols of Transformation.” Catch their show at Amalga, which will be up the entire weekend following First Friday.

Featured artists: Constance Baltuck, Mandy Heck, Willow+Luna, and Jayne Andreen

Annie Kaill’s

244 Front St.

4:30-8 p.m.

Constance Baltuck will be showing two types of work: watercolor landscape paintings and acrylic modern art pieces. Mandy Heck from Abundance Illustration will be presenting her latest collection of miniature original drawings of local wildlife. Annie Kaill’s will also be showcasing handbags from Willow + Luna, a Juneau-based small business.

Finally, Jayne Andreen from J.A. Jules will unveil her latest jewelry collection. She has worked with new gemstones including rubies, aquamarine, London blue topaz, and sapphires.
