CELEBRATION 2016 STUDENT ART SHOW

Juneau Arts & Culture Center

Reception: 4:30–7 p.m.

Sealaska Heritage Institute’s eighth, biennial Juried Art Show opening next week will feature a new Juried Art Youth Exhibit, which will showcase 35 pieces and include 34 objects made by 28 individual young artists and one artwork that was made by 61 6th grade students from Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School. The exhibit will run through June 30. More information page 15.

 

FEATURED ARTIST: AMANDA FILORI

Amanda Filori, an Alaskan artist, lighting technician and mother, will be exhibiting her current works “Blues Obsession” at KTOO. Hosting a radio show on KRNN for the past two years has inspired her to create a body of work showcasing some of her favorite musicians. You will see portraits of Nina Simone, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sonny Boy Williamson and many more.

Reception: 4:30-8 p.m.

Sealaska Heritage Institute and the Sealaska Heritage Store will host featured artists Toni Weber and Samuel Sheakley. Weber’s works include woven red and yellow cedar bark hats, headbands, mini-hat and basket pendants, earring sets, wall hangings and pillows. Sheakley is a jeweler who makes earrings, bracelets and rings in copper, silver and gold. During the First Friday reception from 4:30-8 p.m., SHI will offer free admission to Shuká Hít (the clan house), and will host a performance by Ldakát Naax Satí Yátx’í (All Nations Children). Also on First Friday, the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council Gallery will host SHI’s Northwest Coast Juried Youth Art Exhibit, which runs through June 30.

 

SOFT OPENING, FEATURED ARTIST: HAWAIIAN NATIVE ELDER LEI JIM

Island Sisters Enterprises

Island Sisters will feature Polynesian jewelry artist and local Maui island elder Lei Jim, originator of “God’s Creations.” He’s a naturalist and traditional artist who creates original island Native-inspired jewelry. This will be Island Sisters’ soft opening; they’ll close for the rest of June and reopen full time on July 1 of this year.

 

FEATURED ARTIST: PHOTOGRAPHER FRANK LYNN PIERCE

Reception: 4:30-8 p.m.

Annie Kaill’s will be featuring a collection of work from award winning photographer Frank Lynn Pierce. Pierce is a fine art photographer here in Juneau. Lue maintains part-time studios in Seattle and Capetown, South Africa as well as the Juneau Artists Gallery. Her paintings and sketches have eye-catching movement and quality. Treats will be provided.

 

FEATURED ARTIST: MK MACNAUGHTON

Northern Tea House

4-6 p.m.

Visitors will get to create art on First Friday at the Northern Tea House. Join Maria and MK and make your own tea bag along with a decorative container to hold it. Free project for all ages. The walls will feature landscape oil paintings by MK.

 

FEATURED ARTIST: JOE MCCABE

Reception: 4-6 p.m.

Coppa is excited to be featuring local photographer Joe McCabe and his recent work showcasing the northern lights. The show, entitled “Northern Lights in the Land of the Midnight Sun,” is comprised of aurora images made over the last year in both Southeast Alaska and the Yukon. Uniquely, many of Joe’s final aurora prints are made by capturing multiple images of the scene (up to 8 or more separate frames), stitching (or combining) those images together via specialized software and creating highly detailed, large scale, panoramic final prints. The images in Joe’s show are printed on metal to best capture the brilliance and glow of the auroras as they are seen in person.
