Free piano concerts start Sept. 11

Free piano concerts

JUNEAU — Five Juneau pianists will be featured in monthly free one-hour solo concerts starting Sept. 11 at the Northern Light United Church. The concerts will each be held on a Sunday afternoon starting at 3 p.m.

Donations will be accepted at the five concerts to help pay for a 7-foot grand piano for the new Performing Arts Theater, now under design. Like the piano used in the concerts, which was second hand when it was purchased by the Juneau community 67 years ago, the piano will probably be a used one but one that is a beautiful instrument.

The first concert will be Sept. 11 and the program includes pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Ginastera. The pianist will be Mary Watson, a well-known piano teacher and performer.

The Oct. 23 concert will feature Jon Hays, who recently completed his Masters degree in piano performance in Fairbanks.

Kyle Farley Robinson, who ecently returned from a 3 week piano school in Vermont, will play Nov. 27.

Well-known accompanist and pianist, Doug Smith, will play the Dec. 11 concert.

The last pianist, Sue Kazama, is probably the most active accompanist here in Juneau and is an exciting solo performer.

Organizers hope that by showcasing these five pianists, attendees will moved to donate to the Piano Fund at the Juneau Community Foundation and young pianists will be inspired by the talent and music in their own studies.
