Glacier center updates: Free days, hours change
The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will host its annual autumn family fun day on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The free “Fall Fun Fest” takes place on the fee free day at the glacier.
Events for kindergarten to second graders take place in the morning from 10 a.m.-noon. Activities for third through fifth graders take place from noon-2 p.m.
“This year is more exciting than ever,” organizer Bev Levene stated in a release.
The U.S. Forest Service will introduce their “Agents of Discovery” mobile gaming app for online adventures for kids. Other events include: story time for young children at 10:15 a.m., put on by the Juneau Public Library staff; Discovery Southeast will take families on scheduled outdoor adventures throughout the day; the Raptor Center will present “Blueberry,” a live raven for viewing and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will introduce families to wildlife explorations.
Two students will also be honored at 11 a.m. for their contributions to the new Tongass National Forest Junior Ranger book.
Schedule change
The Visitor Center will close at 4 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. on Sept 23. The center will also close at 4 p.m. on Sept. 24, 28 and 29. On these four days, the building will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Visitor Center will be open for the regular summer hours (8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.) the rest of September. Outdoor areas are open from 6 a.m.-midnight.
Sept. 30 is also a fee free day.
On Oct. 1, the Visitor Center will switch to winter hours: Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No pass or entry fee is needed between October and March.
