Helping Hands holding annual dinner, auction

Helping Hands, which provides food to needy families in Juneau, is holding its annual dinner and auction on Aug. 4.

The dinner will start at 5 p.m. Aug. 4, and will take place at the Valley Church at 9741 Mendenhall Loop Road. The live auction begins at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $10 each, and offered at a discount for children. To buy tickets, people can call 209-1275, and a volunteer will deliver the tickets. If community members or organizations have something they can offer in the auction, they can call the same number.

Helping Hands is always open to nonperishable foods such as canned fruits and vegetables, meats, rice and pasta. Most of the organization’s perishables come from local grocery stores. People can either arrange for volunteers to pick up the food they donate or they can bring it directly to Helping Hands at 6590 Glacier Highway (the Switzer Village Trailer Court Recreation Hall). The hours are 5:30-6:50 p.m.

Helping Hands, which has about 30 committed volunteers, is a member of United Way and serves about 400 people per week. Anybody needing food can come to the warehouse during that 5:30-6:50 p.m. window, and there are no forms to fill out and no questions asked.
