High school coaches thank community for involvement in cross country meet

We want to extend a big thanks to the hundreds of families, volunteers, professionals and friends who contributed to our successful 2015 Region V Cross Country meet held on Sept 26.

We are proud to share our top-notch and challenging course with hundreds of teen runners from 16 schools in Southeast Alaska, and a shout goes out to Colby Shindler and the crew at Parks & Recreation for helping us safely prepare the course. We also thank many people (and dogs) who postponed or re-routed their Saturday morning walks and shared their park with us!

Chief of course Jesse Stringer, along with Andre Bunton and Katie Krehlik, spent hours ensuring our course was clearly marked, accurate and safe. They religiously re-marked and took care of the course during the race to avoid any confusion, despite the predictable and rainy conditions.

Heidi Hall was race coordinator, and chief timer Patty Moser was joined by 12 other volunteers and parents as part of the finish line crew. Andre and Katie put 20 other volunteer course marshals to work along the course to make sure runners were safely directed. We want to thank out starter John Nagel for keeping our meet on time.

We are especially grateful for the many Thunder Mountain and Juneau-Douglas families who hosted our visiting athletes. Last, and certainly not least, we were proud to host the biggest, bestest, postrace potluck in all of Alaska. Thanks to parents Amy Deer, Sima Hermann and Lisolette Barrows for coordinating this.

Kudos, too, to Juneau-Douglas AD Chad Bentz for overseeing his first Region Championship.

Thunder Mountain and Juneau-Douglas high schools XC coaches are pleased to work together to showcase the efforts of this amazing community. We know the coaches and their runners feel welcome and know they are in good hands when they join us for an XC meet. Thanks to all for keeping us running!
