Longer hours, more educational activities ahead for Juneau-Douglas City Museum

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will be open on Sundays from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. beginning July 2 and running through the end of September.

Funding has been received from the Benito and Frances C. Gaguine Foundation, Michelle and Robert Storer, Alison E. Browne, and the Friends of the Juneau-Douglas City Museum to expand museum hours of operation from July-September 2017 and May-June 2018, and to expand public education activities from October 2017-April 2018. This funding will enable the museum to restore the public programs position, which was reduced two years ago due to City and Borough of Juneau budget cuts, to full time.

The museum will be hosting monthly Family Days beginning in June and running through September. Adults with children will receive free admission, and all are invited to participate in a free drop-in activity suitable for children ages 5-10.

The first Family Day will be Saturday, June 17, from 1-3 p.m. We will be reading the picture book, “A Place Where Sunflowers Grow,” and learning origami. After the activity, children and parents can view Fumi Matsumoto’s artwork in the entryway display case and see how she incorporates origami into her pieces, and enjoy the museum and its exhibits. The next Family Day will take place on Sunday, July 23.

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum fosters an awareness of Juneau’s cultural heritage, values, and community memory to draw strength and perspective from the past, inspire learning, and find purpose for the future. More information about the City Museum can be found on the museum’s website: www.juneau.org/library/museum. The City Museum is located at 4th and Main streets, and the phone number is 586-3572. Summer hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. beginning July 2. Summer admission is $6 for general admission, $5 for ages 65 and older, and free for ages 12 and younger, as well as Friends members at the Family level and higher.
