The Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions Club is inviting the community to join them for a special celebration event. In honor of the upcoming 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International, the Juneau Mendenhall Flying Lions Club is inviting civic-minded men and women to join the club.
The club is hosting a “Meet and Greet” on Saturday, May 28, from 11 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Nugget Mall community room. Attendees will have a chance to learn more about the club and its projects. Coffee and cookies will be served and children are welcome.
“We encourage anyone who is interested in making a difference to join us for this special event,” said Club President Mike Norton. “We welcome the opportunity to tell people about our work in the community and how they can get involved. There’s nothing like the feeling of giving back and helping neighbors in need.”
The Mendenhall Flying Lions has been serving the community and Southeast for over 30 years. One of their signature activities is providing free vision screening to children throughout Southeast Alaska. They also provide financial assistance for eye exams and glasses to the needy, clean the road system going to the Glacier, participate in food drives and helping food pantries. Two of their largest fundraising events are their annual barbecue that benefits the American Diabetes Association and Light Flights (in partnership with Coastal Helicopters), which takes passengers over the Mendenhall Valley to view Christmas lights. Most recently, they returned the U.S.S. Juneau silver service to Juneau.
“Lions are people you know—we’re neighbors, friends, and family,” Norton said. “We’re volunteers who enjoy having fun and making a difference in the lives of others.” We’re a small Club and work hard at fundraisers and community service to better our community.
