Floyd Dryden team wins Battle of the Books

The sixth-grade Floyd Dryden Middle School team won first place in the District Battle of the Books Competition at the Mendenhall Valley Public Library on Wednesday.

Team members Della Mearig, Anberlin Tingey, Miranda Stichert and Amelia Walker — coached by Rachelle Grossardt — earned a perfect score of 128 in the competition against Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School and the Adolescent Montessori Program.

Dzantik’i Heeni placed second, with 104 points by team members Ysabel Wilson, Zoe Lessard and Issy Martin.

The Floyd Dryden team will now go on to compete in the statewide Battle of the Books competition on Feb. 26.

UAS announces legislative interns

Three University of Alaska Southeast students were selected for the university’s 2020 Senator Ted Stevens Legislative Internship Program.

The students are Calvin Zuelow of Juneau (placed with Sen. Jesse Kiehl), Christian English of Juneau (placed with Sen. John Coghill) and Elizabeth Ferguson of Kotzebue (Ferguson is not an intern but is taking the seminar course for credit along with the interns).

Sixteen interns were selected in all, from all the university’s campuses.

Juneau students earn honors

Lynda Reynolds of Auke Bay has earned a Master of Science in Nursing – Leadership and Management (BSN to MSN) degree from Western Governors University. The online, nonprofit university has graduated over 167,000 students from across the country since its inception in 1997.

Daffodil Alinson of Juneau was named to Fall 2019 Dean’s List at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. She is majoring in nursing.

Two Juneau-Douglas High School graduates earned academic distinction at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Sabrina Jones and Grace Newman both earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher this past semester.

Alexis Doutt of Juneau and Madeline Handley of Juneau were named to the University of Montana’s honor rolls for the Spring 2019 semester. They earned a 4.0 GPA.
