Sealaska Heritage Institute’s Celebration is coming soon on June 8. As it nears, so do the deadlines of two contests.
For the Traditional Food Contests there will be one for soapberry. This competition is dedicated to the late Helen Watkins, a longtime participant in SHI’s soapberry contest who passed on her knowledge of traditional foods. The grand prize is $500, second prize $250 and third prize is $100. Deadline to apply is June 8 at 5 p.m. The judging will take place on June 9 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. Winners will be announced at Centennial Hall at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 10.
There will also be a Traditional Food Contest for black seaweed. The deadline and the prizes are the same as Soapberry, but the food will be judged from 6-8 p.m. June 9. Winners will also be announced June 10.
Applications for both contests can be found at sealaskaheritage.org.
