• Thank you for supporting the Youth Activity Grant program. With funds from this program, distributed by the Parks and Recreation Department, the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum (FoSLAM) and staff at the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum (APK) presented 13 Exploring the Arts at the APK children’s activity workshops from October 2017 through May 2018. In the free workshops organized by Public Services Librarian Claire Imamura, Alaskan artists from around the state worked with 356 Juneau children as they created their own books, painted landscapes, drew dog portraits, sculpted clay, constructed collages, decorated masks, made hats and visors and learned about Alaska history, culture and art. It was tons of fun.
If you missed the 2017-2018 workshops, don’t despair. Art and Science at the APK in 2018-2019 promises to please. On the first Saturday of each month, October through May, we’ll create cartoons; tell stories through embroidered images; learn formline design, printmaking and archeological field sketching using mystery objects; and create dinosaur and fish drawings with Ray Troll. Family Fair in January is for preschoolers to grandparents. In a community collaborative workshop, participants will use small found objects to fabricate a giant octopus emerging from the ceiling of the Museum’s Children’s room and oozing toward the masts of the good ship Discovery. This obstreperous octopus will be a long-term addition to the children’s room to remind us of the out-of-control effects of plastic pollution. Please join us at the APK each month for First Friday exhibit openings, First Saturday children’s activities, artist and author lectures, and mask-making workshops for the entire family, $5 per mask, on Oct. 13 in preparation for Halloween and the Friends’ Oct. 20 Mask-erade Ball, a sure-fire fun-raising fundraiser.
