Three Juneau-Douglas High School students won awards at the Alaska State Science and Engineering Fair in March for projects that studied herring habitats and glacial recession.
Eric Schumacher was awarded for his project, “Habitat Suitability for Juvenile Pacific Herring using Energetics and Stable Isotopes,” which was conducted at the Auke Bay Laboratories. Clem Taylor-Roth and Tristan Walker-Andrews were also awarded for their project, “Glacial Recession and Primary Succession,” which was conducted on the Juneau Icefield.
Both projects won their category awards as well as a Best Abstract Award. Schumacher’s project earned the top prize from the Alaska Fly Fishers Association, and Taylor Roth and Walker-Andrews’ project received the Chugiak Gem and Mineral Society’s Grand Prize Award.
According to a release, the students participated in Anchorage because Juneau has not had enough participants to hold a local high school fair for the past two years.
