The University of Alaska celebrates College Application Week, Nov. 16-20, by encouraging high school seniors to apply early for college.
According to UA, College Application Week has contributed to a four percent increase in applications in Alaska over the last year.
“College is a game changer, leading to better careers and higher paying jobs,” said Saichi Oba, associate vice president for student and enrollment services at the UA System. “Alaska data shows that 63 percent of Alaska jobs will require a postsecondary education by 2018. Applying early is not only a good first step, but it actually increases a student’s chance of success in college. Students that apply early have more time to apply for financial aid, make important decisions regarding classes and majors, and learn about campus life.”
Oba said the Alaska Performance Scholarship and UA Scholars awards also are important for student success – both can help to pay costs of college, paving the way to college degrees. Another step is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can unlock money to pay college costs. FAFSA funds often are grant-based and that means they do not have to be repaid.
