The American Institute of Architects, Alaska Chapter (AIA Alaska) announced the recipients of its 2016 Design Awards for Excellence in Architecture, in recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design. The Mendenhall Valley Public Library won multiple awards.
The judges gave the Mendenhall Valley Public Library the Honor Award. In a press release, AIA Alaska noted the sweeping ceilings and high clerestory lofts, stating: “It is quietly powerful, and clearly connects design to it source of inspiration.” Northwind Architects designed, and Hacker Architects acted as consultants.
The library also won at the people’s choice awards, or “Drive By Jury of Peers.”
All projects submitted for consideration for the awards were put on display during the conference, and attendees were encouraged to review and vote for their choice. The library received the Ice Cave Award, the project with the most interesting/engaging spatial volumes, as well as the All Around Most Favorite Project 2016 Winner.
