Mudrooms, Wednesday, March 9, 7 pm at Northern Light United Church. The theme for this month’s Mudrooms, in which seven people tell a story, each lasting seven minutes, is “In Uniform.” $7 donation, with proceeds going to Meals on Wheels.

 

2016 Home & Outdoor Living Expo, Friday, March 11 – Sunday, March 13. A weekend-long home show. $6 general admission, children free; more information www.seabia.com.

 

In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play, Friday, March 11-April 3, Perseverance Theatre. The play takes place at the dawn of the age of electricity. The perfect gentleman and inventor, Dr. Givings has created a device to treat “hysteria” in his patients by inducing “paroxysms.” This attracts the attention of his wife. A modern comedy of manners. Man of La Mancha, March 11-20, Juneau-Douglas High School. Juneau Lyric Opera will perform the story of a dying old man whose impossible dream takes over his mind. Against all odds, Quixote and his trusty squire Sancho take to the road in a quest to chivalry, and seek out the good and innocent in a world filled with darkness and despair. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. except Sundays, which begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 adults, $20 students and seniors.

Community Ballroom Dance, Friday, March 11, JACC. Mardi Gras theme. Lessons start at 7 pm; The Ron Maas Big Band at 8 pm. Costumes are encouraged. $10 donation or pay as able; kids less than 50 pounds in weight are free. Proceeds divided between band and the JACC.

 

Juneau’s Got Talent, 7 pm Sat., March 12, JACC. Talented Juneauites compete before an audience and a panel of “celebrity judges.” $30 per person or $60 per pair. More information page 19.

 

Storytime, every Wednesday at 11 am at the downtown public library, Thursday at the Douglas library and Friday at the Valley library.

 

Arts Roundtable, Wednesday, March 16, 5 pm in the KTOO Conference Room. Katrina Pearson, owner of Taku Graphics and Shorefast Editions, will discuss publishing and market/distribution of art in the Alaska region. There will also be an open discussion period for peer grant review. This arts roundtable is presented by the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council.

 

WORKSHOPS & CLASSES

 

Fishing in fly-in lakes, 7 pm Wednesday, March 9 in the Thunder Mountain High School Library. Sam Capp will speak on fishing fly-in lakes in Southeast Alaska. He has his own plane and has fished many of them. He’ll also talk about what flies and techniques have worked best for him. This is a meeting of the Raincountry Flyfishers, to which all are welcome.

 

English Classes, 5:30–7 pm, every Wednesday, Mendenhall Valley Public Library, 3025 Riverside Dr. This group will practice speaking, reading, and writing English. Provided by The Learning Connection. All are welcome. Details: www.serrc.org/tlc

 

International Dance Workshop, Saturday, March 12, 10 am – 4:30 pm, Sunday, March 13, 1:30 pm. Filipino Community Hall. California dance instructor Lee Otterholt will introduce some of his favorite international dances. No previous experience or partner necessary. Pay as you can.

 

Get Gardening, Saturday, March 12, 9 am – 12 pm, Zach Gordon Youth Center. Alaska Master Gardneners will share best practices and techniques for planning and starting a vegetable garden in your home or greenhouse. Free. Tlingit Language Learners Group, 6–7 pm Mondays, Downtown Juneau Public Library, large conference room. Interested in learning the Tlingit language? This group, run by Tlingit language learners, is free and open to everyone in the community, regardless of language experience. The night sky tonight, Monday, March 14, 7 pm, Mendenhall Valley Public Library. The Marie Drake Planetarium’s program will cover current astronomical events, including the recent detection of gravitational waves. This will be followed by “Earth Day Humor,” a special presentation to prepare us for the arrival of Earth Day.

The Juneau chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting “IF4,” a film festival of short and feature length films showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly-fishing and the outdoors. HAINES – Rivertalk 7-9 pm Thursday, March 10, Chilkat Center for the Arts. The theme is Ferry/Fairy Tales. Seven locals will each tell a seven-minute story. $7 donation.
