Each week throughout the summer, the Juneau Public Libraries, in collaboration with the Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries and local businesses, award young readers various prizes for writing book reviews about their favorite summer reads. During the seventh week of the Summer Reading Program activity, the Juneau Public Libraries received 53 different book reviews from 22 different young readers under the age of 18. Here is a summary of the top book reviews from this week’s winners:

From the Downtown Library:

“Frog and Toad All Year” by Arnold Lobel: “One fascinating part of this book is at Christmas toad was worried about frog in a hole.” — Freyja Shelton, age 6.

“The Austere Academy” by Lemony Snicket: “One fascinating part of this book is how Vice Principal Nero forces his students to attend his 6 hour violin recitals when he doesn’t even know how to play.” — Kareena Bathija, age 13.

“Hooray for Fish” by Lucy Cousins: “One fascinating part of this book is when the little fish finds her mom.” — Shaden Jensen, age 4.

“That’s Good That’s Bad in the Grand Canyon” by Margery Cutler: “One fascinating part of this book is when the helicopter reaches him up.” — Makiah Jensen, age 7.

From the Douglas Library:

“The Teacher from the Black Lagoon” by Mike Thaler: “One fascinating part of this book is that is was this little boy’s first day of school and his teacher was a dragon!.” — Brianna Powers, age 7

“Oh, Cats!” by Nola Buck: “One fascinating part of this book is when the cats jump out of the tree.” — Evan Converse, age 6

“Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins

“One fascinating part of this book is when Katniss volunteers for Prim at the reaping.” — Lydia Powers, age 11

From the Mendenhall Valley Library:

“The Alchemyst” by Michael Scott: “One fascinating part of this book is so many things but one thing I liked was how they thought of all of the magical spells like when Nicholas Flamel opened the secret door to Scotty’s house.” — Kat Shelton, age 9.

“Billy and Monster’s New Neighbor has a Secret” by David Chuka: “One fascinating part of this book is when the boy’s neighbor showed up with a monster just like the boy.” — Stephanie Reynoso, age 9.

“Stellaluna” by Janell Cannon: “One fascinating part of this book is when the momma gets her baby Stellaluna.” — Ruth Nelson, age 6.

“Captain Sky Blue” by Richard Egielski: “I liked him flying and I liked when he fell in the whale.” — Quinlan Nelson, age 4.

“Jedi Academy” by Jeffrey Brown: “One fascinating part of this book is using The Force.” — Esther Nelson, age 7.
