The City and Borough of Juneau will not sit idly this summer, with five construction projects spread across the city as well as pavement resurfacing projects throughout, according to a city engineer.
The most major of these projects will be rebuilding the road, water, sewer and drainage infrastructure on Columbia Boulevard, said John Bohan, CBJ’s chief capital improvement project engineer in an email. The project encompasses Columbia Boulevard, Poplar Avenue and Mendenhall Boulevard. This season will focus on Columbia Boulevard and Poplar Avenue, while the 2021 construction season will focus on Mendenhall Boulevard and Columbia Boulevard.

Construction will continue on Douglas Highway, picking up at David Street, where it terminated last season, and continuing on toward downtown Douglas.
“There will be traffic lane reconfigurations and flaggers present with one lane traffic. We anticipate delays will be similar to but less than last year,” Bohan said. “Work will begin soon and should be completed by fall 2020.”

Reconstruction of the road base with replacements of the drains, water and sewer infrastructure will also be carried out in three other places this season. The first is along Aspen Avenue from Mendenhall Boulevard to Taku Boulevard. The second is along Savikko Road from Front Street to the end of Savikko End near Sandy Beach. The third is along Hospital Drive near its intersection with Glacier Highway.

Bohan said there would also be pavement resurfacing in a multiple areas, including: Trout Street from Glacier Highway to the Trout Street Bridge, Mark Alan Street, Mountain Avenue from North Street to the end of Mountain Avenue, Ash Street from Willow Drive to Angus Way and Behrends Avenue from Glacier Avenue to Highlands Drive.
