Candlelight vigil to stop Trump

A united group of Alaska conservatives and progressives will join together at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Alaska State Capitol to encourage Alaska’s electors to “vote their conscience” and stop Donald Trump from becoming president.

The vigil is part of a nationwide effort to encourage members of the Electoral College to vote against Trump when they cast their electoral votes Dec. 19. Traditionally, electors vote in agreement with their state’s popular vote; Because Alaska voted for Trump in the general election Nov. 7, Alaska’s three electoral votes are expected to go to Trump.

A group called Unite for America launched the nationwide effort to sway electors in response to news of Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election, concerns about foreign bribery and conflicts of interest for Trump.

Several electors, including Texas Republican Elector Christopher Suprun, have already vowed not to vote for Trump, instead opting to vote for a “responsible Republican alternative,” such as Republican Gov. John Kasich of Ohio.

The effort has spurred similar protests in every U.S. state capitol.

A local group called the Justice Scouts will host the vigil at the capitol building at 400 Seward Ave, Juneau, AK 99801.
